(from flikr)
This appears to be AGCS’s first live review, I’m not sure why its taken so long but we’ll start off with a belter shall we? If you’re regular readers of this you will have already seen a gushing single and (9/10) album review, and here comes a live-bit-a-lovin. We were hoping to get an interview with the band too but it fell through, hopefully next time eh..
So… after pulling out of their headline show in Leicester last year, Grammatics were back supporting Rolo Tomassi as part of a huge UK tour. They rocked the house as the main support playing a 35 minute set including 5 songs off their debut album (including Swan Song being played for the first time live), plus an awesome dual vocal new song. Being a very technical and tight band, it’s a shame they had to be followed by Rolo Tomassi, the polar opposite of technical with their self proclaimed genre of ‘spazzcore’. I’m sure they’re great for their genre, but I wasn’t a fan and I AM ALWAYS RIGHT. Grammatics were ace though; check their album out or see them on tour supporting Bloc Party in (Bl)october.
Setlist:
Shadow Committee

Grammatics finally release their eponymous debut on Dance To The Radio and, unsurprisingly, it’s great!
This isn’t going to be a long review as I don’t see the point in repeating what basically every other review has said; this album is a fantastic. If you haven’t heard the band before the live line-up iss boy/girl vocals, guitar, bass, cello and drums; on record however there is all manner of wonderful programming, sound design and extra flourishes. It’s produced really well and sounds epic from opener (and my track of the year 2008) Shadow Committee, to equally epic Relentless Fours in the middle, and onto disjointed Swan Song at the end, taking all manner of experiments in pop in the gaps between.
However, like many new artists Grammatics released four singles prior to this, and these as well as a couple of the B Sides have been put on the album meaning I knew half the tracks before (that is the sole criticism). However, many were re-recorded and if you haven’t heard them before, you get a fresh album. This is not a massive fault with the band though as the songs are fantastic; it’s just a shame I (being a long time fan) didn’t get 12 new tracks served up.
It’s great anyway and I implore you to buy it, if you don’t believe me check out some more of the barrage of praised reviews and more importantly hit the Myspace page and listen for yourselves! www.myspace.com/grammatics
Out today.

They say a lot rides in the debut single of a band, so why not debut twice?! Yes Grammatics re-release Shadow Committee with the hope of getting it in more ears, and with good reason as its literally brilliant. Yes it’s a bit emo, but emo+ if you like, and with it being one of my most played tracks of 2008 it gets not only a gushy review, but also my full recommendation.
Grammatics are touring throughout April with Rolo Tomassi and Pulled Apart by Horses. We will be there to report back on the action, as well as hopefully getting (through our sister publication) an exclusive extended interview with Grammatics.
Shadow Committee is out today, check back next week for the album review (hint, it’s going to be gushing).
