White Lies - Bigger Than Us

So this single has been out a while now. After Zane played it out it sort or perplexed me; White Lies were, up to that point, a pretty terrible band on the back end of an Interpol copycat wave, led by Editors, that had thankfully died. But this is undeniably huge. I caught the video today and whilst I can’t say I fully understand it, or that as a video it really deserves to be understood at any depth. Still, I watched the whole thing, and these days that means something.

The Hood Internet - ABX - I XXXOed (M.I.A. vs Sufjan Stevens)

A slow burner from The Hood Internet here, which is a first. Putting Suf-J’s new electronic penchant to good use under M.I.As quite good XXXO makes for a tidally tempoed, strangely thoughtful mash-up that makes more sense with every listen.

Major Lazer -  Percumajor

Even though I’m ‘sooo last year’ on the Major Lazer tip, this video is phresh out the starting blocks and I can’t take it all the MS paint wobbliness in one sitting.

Best Coast - Boyfriend

“But Alistair, this is a music video, and it’s Best Coast again and this song has been out a while now and…”

sorry.

Twin Shadow - Forget

The frankly perfect Twin Shadow, who had me hooked with ‘Slow’ a couple of weeks back have an album in a handy embeddable player (take note record companies!) Which means all I have to do is stop typing and you can enjoy the amazing, post-punk/funk-pop/hyphenated-blog-hyperbole ‘Forget’ below.

Frankie Rose & The Outs - You’re No Good

I downloaded this track a couple of days ago from that tiny indie blog that no-one’s heard of and can’t get enough of it.

In addition to playing drums in her current band Crystal Stilts Frankie Rose is the original drummer and part time bassist/vocalist for Vivian Girls, (who, coincidentally was replaced by Ali Koehler, who officially joined Best Coast in July 2010 after leaving the Vivian Girls.) So there’s the skeletons in surfwaves’ closet.

Wow, another post that managed to get back to Best Coast. Sorry.

Check out the brilliant ‘You’re No Good’ below that will feature on an upcoming Aquarium Drunkards girl-groups mixtape, Where The Boys Aren’t, the first blog mixtape I’ve ever eagerly anticipated this much. (A fucking lot).

THE DAILY DOWNLOAD Mux Mool - Valley Girls

And now for something a little different. Plug in your sub, Mux Mool is the more ear grabbing moniker of Brian Lindgren. His myspace explains:

Mux is short for ‘multiplexing,’ which is the streaming of many types of information through one channel,” he explains, “and Chac-Mool is an ancient Meso-American statue of a reclining man.” A technologically complex breed of synthesis and a timeless piece of indigenous art. Sounds about right.

He is, along with Hudson Mohawk and Dorian Concept, joining a wave of really well produced, mostly lyricless Hip-Hop that I’d like to term “Intelligent Hip-Hop” not only to distinctly and succinctly separate my own taste from a lot of the chaff, but also because I enjoy making up sub-genres in the hopes I’ll one day here someone say it back to me. Intelligent hip-hop. Tell your friends.

Tell your friends, and download his free EP from Ghostly International here.

THE DAILY DOWNLOAD: Marnie Stern - For Ash

An amazing and brilliantly promising prelude to her self titled new album, For Ash is everything Marnie Stern is great at, done better. An uplifting wall of sound complete with Marnie’s falsetto voice-guitar combo and those drums! THOSE DRUMS! Wow. I warn you, you may take flight mid-listen.

Dead Models

Escapism. With British weather as it is, and the British complaining as they do, the closest I’ll get to California this year is riding a surf inspired sub-genre all the way to shore.

And though we’re definitely getting close to hitting sand with Best Coast charting, and the inescapable and innumerable (sea) watered down copycats that are sure (shore) to follow - to stay in this hazy bubble you’ll need to go more authentic.
