15TH DECEMBER
Fifteen days into our countdown I’m beginning to realise that most of the Christmas songs I’ve posted are pretty depressing, and that’s not gonna change any time soon. “Christmas is Cancelled” sees the Long Blondes doing what they do best, with Kate Jackson telling an ex to “just raise a glass to two more people spending Christmas day alone”. Lovely

Slow Club’s debut album Yeah So (review here) was one of this years undoubted highlights, and so I was excited when the band announced they would be releasing a Christmas EP. There’s some great new songs on it, but it’s the previously released “Christmas TV” which really stands out. You can get the whole thing here.

Halfway through our calendar and AGCS have still got loads of great songs left, and today’s is especially good. Hot Club De Paris released “Will You Still Be In Love With Me Next Year” a couple of years ago now but it remains one of the best things they’ve recorded. In a just world this would be a Christmas hit, so instead of getting RATM or X Factor to number one I’m starting my own campaign to get Hot Club to the top of the charts. OK, top 100? No? Well, you can’t say I didn’t try.

I don’t know about you, but its been freezing cold all day in Sheffield and I could do with some sunshine. Step forward The Beach Boys with “Little Saint Nick”, a song that does a pretty great job of transporting Californian surf-pop to the North Pole. It’s so infectiously joyous it could even get Scrooge into the Christmas spirit.

Day 11 of our countdown brings us a pretty bold reinterpretation of Christmas classic “Do You Hear What I Hear” courtesy of Duels. This comes from the same excellent charity compilation as the Lightspeed Champion song we posted a few days ago, and you can (and definately should) get the record HERE.

Today’s festive fun comes in the form of “Christingle”, a song released by AGCS contributor Greg under his Greg The Hero moniker. Cry nepotism all you like, but I wouldn’t post the track up here just to humour him - it is a genuinely good Christmas song, as you’re sure to find out if you click the little play button above. Go on, click it. And click here to listen to more tracks.
Will that do Greg?

I don’t know how they managed it, but Fucked Up, with a little help from their friends, have recorded a genuinely good version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. Seriously, I hate the original song, but with some awesomely distorted guitar and the assistance of Ezra Koenig, David Cross, Yo La Tengo, and Andrew W.K. (to name but a few), the Canadian hardcore punk group have turned it into the anthem Bono and that twat from the Boomtown Rats never could. This has just been released and I would urge you to click HERE (for UK) or HERE (for US) and download it. All the money is going to good causes which you can read more about HERE. Go forth and spread the goodwill!

While Eels last album may have been a bitter disappointment, they’ve had no shortage of great songs in the past and “Christmas Is Going To The Dogs” is no exception. Written for The Grinch it’s a charming look at Christmas from a canine perspective. Enjoy!

AGCS is looking forward to a number of releases in the new year, but we’re particularly exited about the new album from Lightspeed Champion. “Christmas in Prison”, recorded with long-time collaborator Emmy The Great, was one of Dev Hynes first solo ventures after Test Icicles split, released in 2006 on charity album It’s Not Like Christmas. It’s a skilful rendering of a little known country song which features some great vocal interplay between Dev and Emmy, and another great addition to our Christmas Calendar.

Day 6 of our countdown and it’s time for some holiday hip-hop. Without further ado, here’s “Christmas In Hollis” by RUN DMC - probably the greatest Xmas rap song of all time.
