There’s a definite Kate Bush influence to your songs, was that a conscious influence?
I didn’t really know Kate Bush ‘til I was sixteen or seventeen and I’d already been singing for quite a few years before that, but I find it a massive compliment, I’m very flattered. Kate Bush is incredible, but I wouldn’t say I’m massively influenced by her.

Some of your songs are quite dark, where does that come from?

It  just comes out of my head during the middle of the night, that’s when I get inspiration for lyrics.

Did you start off as singer on your own? How did the band come together?

I started off as a songwriter and I guess I started doing gigs with my own little songs. We made this album and as we were adding the 100th guitar to Nitrogen Pink, me and my producer Simon looked at each other and said ‘how the fuck are we going to do this live?’ and that’s when the band came together.

You’ve now been on BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 music and you received a great review from NME; do you feel you’ve made it?
God no, no I can’t imagine ever feeling like I’ve made it. What does making it mean? I honestly don’t know. My happiest moment was this Monday when I saw the record for the first time in the shop, I thought I’d leave the shop feeling really excited but instead I had this thought – ‘Ok so what do I do now?’ I’ve made the record, now what shall I be?

Did you buy your record when you went into the shop?
I didn’t, no. I’ve lost my card so I couldn’t get any cash out! I though I’ll leave it for somebody else to take pity on me.

How’s touring been?
It’s been wicked. It’s hard work but you kind of get addicted to the adrenaline. It’s really fun, I get awful stage fright so my adrenaline buzz doubles probably and it’s a great feeling being on the road and being with all the boys.

What made you start singing?

Well I started writing when I was twelve, I don’t think anything made me start. It was just always something that I did, I never thought about doing. None of it was very conscious; I wish it would have been. Once I’d started doing it, it was all I ever did. I’d spend hours in my bedroom playing on guitar and piano and ended up doing it all the time!
