Lightspeed Champion Q&A / New Video

Dev Haynes aka Lightspeed Champion has been doing a Q&A through one of his website forums and to save you trying to find it, AGCS have compiled the best questions with the best answers to create a post that may look like we interviewed Dev ourselves. But we didn’t.

Q: Are you afraid, with sophomore albums usually having some sort of defining moment on your career, that people may not ‘get’ this album?
A: Yeah that doesn’t really bother me, that’s not to say that it wasn’t in my mind at certain points, it’s human nature. But if you go through life thinking like this, it’s bound to drive you crazy.. funnily enough, this very subject is the meaning behind the ‘Marlene’ video.

Q: From what I’ve gathered this album is less acoustic than the last one?
A: I guess, I mean, the last one wasn’t actually acoustic either, people just said it was.. and posing for photos with an acoustic most likely didn’t help this..

Q: When you wrote the songs and as you’ve already said you took a lot of influence from classical music, was there one period that you took most of the influence from like baroque or romantic etc?
A: Baroque was definitely one influence, but I found myself drawn to quite a a lot of 20th century composers.

Q: Would you say your new album will still have a similar core ‘feeling’ to your début, or do you think its an entire new machine all in itself?
A: Interesting.. the first song on the album, is more of a transition piece, which actually mentions the midwest in the chorus. I feel the midwest influence is possibly stronger but in various different regions on this record. Everything I do i think has the same core feeling, I just try and dress up differently.. I usually fail…

Q: How did recording this album feel compared to the first? Was there a lot more pressure internally to do stuff more over the top?
A: Not really, technically it’s kind of like my 20th album, that’s how I look at things, and I don’t take music seriously , because I love it so much. It’s all fun at the end of the day, whether people like it or not… not the end of the world for anyone involved. Be that parties making or listening.

Q: When do you think you’ll be touring?
A: I’ve been told I have to tour end of February until end of march. The music played on this tour will have ZERO connection to the studio albums, just a word of warning. It’ll be Lightspeed, because it has to be. But i have no way of re-creating the albums, so I’ll do something else.

Q: This was a non question about Dev being an artist changing his sound over time, and the how the listener was scare of this change. Dev responded to the statement with…
A: It’s best not to look at things as a timeline..look at everything I do as a graph. Everything is it’s own thing, and feel free to enjoy them all, at the end of the day, it’s all just music, and that will always exist, regardless of whatever else is around it. So there’s no such thing as reinvention because that then denotes that everything is in a singular line.. you know? Music is just music to enjoy, there are no rules, if people think this album sucks, it doesn’t matter, they might like Test Icicles, or if they hate that they might like Blood Orange (Dev’s side project) e.t.c.. It’s not as if an album suddenly dies as soon as another piece of music is made.

Furthermore, a few days ago we posted a radio rip of new single Marlene, and now the official video is up. It’s good.
